Ashtanga yoga is a strenuous, methodical style of yoga that combines breath work with a predetermined order of poses in six series of progressively harder poses. Sun Salutations are performed at the start of the practice to warm the body. Standing poses, seated poses and a final sequence are then performed.
This technique calms the mind, cleanses the body, and increases physical strength, flexibility, and endurance. The three main tenets of Ashtanga are gaze points (drishti), internal energy locks (bandhas), and breath control (ujjayi breathing). These techniques combined foster inner tranquilly, focus, and a strong mind-body connection.
